Recovering Ocean-Bound Plastic in Egypt
Egypt was selected for this project due to its critical plastic waste issues and the necessity to support underserved communities. The initiative helps reduce the plastic waste burden while improving healthcare access for collection members and their families, thereby enhancing overall community well-being.
Through our partnership with Plastic Bank, we collect plastic within 50 kilometres of ocean-bound areas. Our communities gather plastic waste from various sources, including beaches, riverbanks, and households, directly addressing ocean plastic pollution.
Together, we reveal value in plastic waste and improve lives. Members exchange plastic waste for bonuses at local Plastic Bank branches, enabling access to necessities like groceries, fuel, education, and healthcare. Our secure and traceable income sources empower vulnerable communities to overcome poverty.
Plastic Bank, a social enterprise focused on reducing ocean-bound plastic and enhancing community welfare, turns plastic waste into a valuable currency. This innovative model not only mitigates environmental problems but also delivers significant social benefits.
In 2020, Plastic Bank introduced its initiative in Egypt, addressing both plastic pollution and healthcare access. Through a partnership with Smart Company, Plastic Bank provides a Sehaty discount card to collection members and their families. This card offers up to 40% discounts on a wide range of health services, including medicine and clinic visits, making healthcare more affordable and accessible to those in need.
